No school next Friday, May 23, 2025 and No School on the Federal Holiday, Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2025. 

Bulldog Band Concert this weekend at the Tag der Musik in beautiful Ruschberg!  The concert begins at 1500 on Sunday, May 18, 2025 at Bürgerhaus Ruschberg (Hauptstraβe, 55776 Ruschberg).  Whether you're a music lover, a curious listener, or just looking for a cozy afternoon with friends and neighbors, there's something for everyone. Enjoy live performances from local talented students playing their violin, saxophone or trumpet and you will be able to witness the hard work and dedication of Mr. Cutter and our 3-5 grade Bulldog Band.  Afterwards, join us for Kaffee und Kuchen—a beloved German tradition of enjoying coffee and cake together to wind down the weekend.

Congratulations to our New PTO Board for SY25/26 elected this past Wednesday evening. Incoming for SY25/26 is President-Keila Benitez, Vice President-Serena Castellanos, Treasurer-Geri Walker; Secretary-Ingrid Carmona, Faculty Advisor-Ms. Linda Yates, Publicist-Melani George, Volunteer Coordinator-Sydney Blizzard-Bailey.  I would like to thank the outgoing PTO Board members for the many volunteer hours dedicated to serving on our Bulldog Student and Teacher this school year, thank you to our outgoing President-Jasmine Jackson, Vice President-Denise Colwell, Treasurer-Serena Castellanos, Publicist-Kendra Robinson, and Volunteer Coordinator-Amanda Vargas. 

The School Advisory Committee: Our School Advisory Committee will be meeting at 1600 on May 19th for our End of the Year closeout meeting.  During the meeting we will be nominating leadership positions for SY 25/26, preparing our end-of-the-year reports, and setting dates for next year’s SAC meetings.  If you or someone you know are interested in serving as President, Vice President, or Secretary on the School Advisory Committee, please email sacsmithes@gmail.com to make a nomination.  Minutes from the most recent SAC meeting are posted outside the main office and on the Smith ES Official DoDEA Website.

USAJOBS - Job Announcement Substitutes are Needed NOW for SY25/26.  The job of a substitute is to stand in the place of the classroom teacher executing the daily instructional plans, to maintain good order and discipline in the classroom.  Smith ES is also in need of new Substitutes who are Nurse Certified.  If you, or someone you know are interested in working as a substitute teacher/nurse at Smith ES, please log into USAJobs.gov and apply today.  USAJOBS - Job Announcement  We generally pull applications and interview candidates at the first of each month.  The process can take a while to complete a background check so apply early to be ready to begin when school starts in August 2025.

UPK Enrollment/Registration – If you have a family in your unit asking questions about preschool registration, let them know they can register their new student online by accessing the DoDEA Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program page on the DoDEA website.  There is a link in the information to the registration page.  I will facilitate a special UPK Open Forum with introductory information in the Smith ES Cafeteria at 1430 on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.  Please help us spread the word about Preschool Enrollment.  If you have specific questions concerning enrollment, please reach out to Robert.Woods@dodea.edu.

Celebrating 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders

This past week we celebrated our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students for doing their best work on the Math & Literacy Summative Assessments. Great job taking your time and thinking through all the questions!

DoDEA School Dress Code

Students MUST wear:

  • Tops with sleeves (sleeveless tops/dresses are permitted for school sponsored formal events such as prom)
  • Solid clothing (not transparent or translucent) that fully covers the top and bottom from armpit to mid-thigh
  • Shoes (shoes must be safe for the school environment)
    • Bedroom slippers shall not be worn, except for school activities approved by the principal
    • Open toe shoes with a strap across the heel are allowed

Students CANNOT wear clothing with:

  • Language or images promoting violence
  • Language or images that depict, promote, or advocate the illegal use or sale of drugs, alcohol or tobacco products; violent conduct; curse words; pornography; that contain threats or expressions which are violent, discriminatory, lewd or obscene; or that advocate or promote any other illegal item or activity or the use of same
  • Derogatory speech and/or imagery that targets groups based on race/color, ethnicity/national origin, sex, sexual orientation, disability, religion, or any other characteristic protected by law.
  • Headgear that obscures the face (except as a religious observance or health purpose); clothing items with hoods attached can be worn but must not cover the head

* Teachers/courses can require certain attire as part of the curriculum (for example: physical education, culinary) that may include specific dress

* DoDEA issued athletic uniforms and athletic practice attire outside of the DoDEA school dress code is permitted when worn by participants during athletic practices and sports events
