DoDEA Operations in a "Government Shutdown"

In the event of a lapse in appropriations after September 30, 2023 leading to a “government shutdown”, DoDEA schools will remain open for normal operations, except for sports (including practices) and extracurricular activities which will pause during a shutdown.

About Our School

Smith ES Mission

Educate, Engage and Empower military-connected students to succeed in a dynamic world.

Smith ES Vision

Excellence in Education for Every Student, Every Day, Everywhere.

About

Smith Elementary School was established in 1952 and had its grand opening on January 24, 1953. The school is named after Captain Harold D. Smith, an honored solider of WWII. Today, Smith ES services students of military and civilian personnel of the local U.S. military communities of Smith Barracks and Ramstein Air Base. Students come to Smith ES from base housing of Smith Barracks, Wetzel Housing, and local German communities that are in the bus zoning villages of Smith ES and Baumholder Middle/High School.

In 2023, ground will be broken for a new 21st century school on the Wetzel Housing area, with a tentative opening date of Fall 2026.
