Smith Elementary School in Baumholder, Germany, recently hosted an exhilarating STEAM Night, drawing over 300 students, siblings, and parents for an evening of hands-on learning and fun. Organized by Renee Stotz, the school's dedicated Educational Technologist, the event featured a variety of engaging stations manned by enthusiastic teachers and volunteers from the University of Maryland Global Campus, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, and the Baumholder Middle High School Robotics Club.
The event was a resounding success, offering students a unique opportunity to explore the fascinating worlds of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). The night was filled with a wide array of activities designed to spark curiosity and foster a love for learning. Stations included salt drawings, origami, homemade lava lamps, building challenges, chain reactions, computer coding, microscopes, robots, and much more.
One of the highlights of the evening was the robotics station, where students had the chance to pick up and drive robotic cars and other robots. The excitement was palpable as students eagerly took turns maneuvering the robots, showcasing their newfound skills and creativity.
"The students absolutely loved it," said Renee Stotz. "They were fully engaged and kept asking when the next STEAM Night would be. It's wonderful to see their enthusiasm and interest in STEAM subjects."
The event not only provided a fun and educational experience for the students but also fostered a sense of community among the attendees. Parents, teachers, and volunteers all came together to support the students' learning journeys, making the night a memorable one for everyone involved.
Given the overwhelming success of this year's event, Smith Elementary School plans to make STEAM Night an annual tradition. "We are already looking forward to next year's STEAM Night," Stotz added. "Our goal is to continue providing these enriching experiences for our students and to inspire them to pursue their interests in STEAM fields."
